We only have a phone to get broadband - is there a way of getting just broadband so I can avoid this 50p per month BB tax so that others can get better than my 512k?

How's the 3G coverage in your area?
varies between 0% and zilch nada nothing.

Is your area covered by Virgin Media?
Nope

I'm guessing that since you're in the sticks then the answer will probably be, lousy 3G coverage and no Virgin Media in your area. I gather even providers like Opal (Talktalk) only provide broadband with a phone line.
I've got broadband with namesco, and a BT line so you can get BB without these poxy buy one get one for not quite as much deals but I guess someone else (BT in this case) is theoretically paying for line maintenance.

I was under the impression actually that part of this funding was to go towards paying for the USO so everyone can get at least 2MBit/sec via
so what are they going to do for me? Move the exchange or break the laws of physics?
Well it might be technically possible in the future to run fibre to the street cabinet to shorten the line length (trials are going on at the moment). Okay, that might mean they have to stick a cabinet somewhere nearer (assuming there already isn't a street cabinet in between your exchange and home), but then again this is BT, so I dare say they'll just let some other company pick up the slack. Otherwise there was trials using from what I gather, some sort of SDSL technology which can run up to 1 meg on long line lengths, or bonded with two lines up to 2 Meg (guess if they had 20 lines it could be bonded to 20 Meg) although I haven't found at details of exactly how much it would cost for the customer (SDSL appears to be anything from bloody expensive to taking out a second morgage).

Other than that, I believe that the mobile providers are being pressured into increasing their coverage. But again I'm sure I've read somewhere that some of the mobile providers are now taking down masts and also looking at Fem2Cell devices (a box which plugs into your broadband which acts as a mini low power mobile phone mast). Downside of that though is you still have to pay for calls/data, plus buy the box (IIRC it's over £100 at the moment) AND possibly have to pay for additional bandwidth used.

Then there is the possible network sharing of T-Mobile and Orange now they're merging (from what I've heard).

I dunno, seems like doom and gloom. Might be quicker/cheaper to get a load of Pigeons.
various means. Of course, that could just be an excuse to milk an extra tax out of us. I must admit, if I didn't have to pay a tenner a month extra on my broadband if I didn't have a phone line I'd probably drop the line.
