I have got him now to a point where a scan with malwarebytes has shown
up a Trojan in c:\programfiles\relaventknowledge\ 
so I have asked him to boot back in to Linux and zap it in to oblivion.

I can't think how may people spend however many hours sorting out these
troubles on Windoze.  At least with Linux it's only Freezing browsers or
not ever getting your hardware to work!
