Those are reasonable points.

One approach is to show Linux as very configurable, and present the distributions as (GNU/)Linux configured in various ways for particular uses or people, with most of those being very special (in the way that Windows is configured rather differently for each of various companies than what you see after installing it from CD)

So most people are likely to find Ubuntu a good default first pick, unless they have some reason for wanting one of the other mainstream ones, such as a user of one of them handy to help them, or the source of it all, Debian, which is a little pure and ascetic for many.
