Re: [LUG] Advice on wireless strength

Hey there,

Right so you already have an aerial...is it an omni-directional or
directional aerial? this can make a massive difference in performance.
Also remember that it is not just the router that can have aerials
replaced desktop pci cards normally allow this as well.

A directional antenna will make a huge difference. At uni my friend
used a spare wok and i pringal cans to make reflectors to direct out
omnidirectional antennas - there are great diy projects out there

http://www.instructables.com/id/Project_Wind_Surfer/

it is surprising what the results from this are - also to cut
interference you can build a Faraday day cage behind the reflector and
or between the antenna and a source of inteerrference eg power cables
emit a electromagnetic field. this also means that power cables should
not be coiled ass it makes its field stronger. rather bunch them and
tuck them behind something.

as long ass the aerial is from a reputable manufacture that fine and
hawking are well known in the industry, i think they are most famous
for there little dish usb wifi unit - 8db directional usb -
brilliant!!! one of the best products out there.

I would have a fiddle with what you have got - obviously the more open
the area where it is the better as this allows for reflecting waves to
be received.

all i can think of at mo
