I agree, there is no way that I'm giving them my NI number and I have 
questioned whether or not it falls foul of the Data Protection Act here 
in the UK.

Legally I don't think Italy has the right to deny .it domains to any EU 
citizen but that is another can of worms and one I really couldn't be 
bothered with - life's too short.
