Hi Alex,

You have confused your poor little 'puter with this one. Usually Mepis calls
your drives eg sda1, sda2 and sdb1, sdb2 for 2 drives with 2 partions each.
During install it looks for what is already there and generates a grub menu
with the new Mepis as default and any other OS as an alternative. By
disconnecting the XP drive a grub menu must have been generated with no
alternative.

BUT when you installed with only the caddy drive, this would have been called
sda1. When you then reconnected and rebooted the XP drive would have been
called sda1 and the caddy drive sdb1 and the poor old grub would have nowhere
to go. You could rewrite the grub menu but I suspect the easiest thing to do
as Rob says, is to reinstall with everything connected as it should be. I've
run Mepis for a few years now and have found it's install very reliable.

As my old Dad used to say, "Bad grub will always come back to haunt you in the
night".
