Hmm, I wonder if it's because the SATA drive wasn't installed when Mepis 
was installed.  Not used Mepis Linux but if it's anything like Ubuntu 
then it may label the IDE drives as /dev/sdX rather than /dev/hdX.  If 
this is the case and Mepis is looking for it's installation on /dev/sda1 
then it may be finding the Windows XP partition and then getting confused.

I think you would have been better off in leaving the SATA drive 
installed when installing Mepis, that way you should have been able to 
select the IDE drive as the destination drive when you installed.  The 
only changes in theory to the SATA drive would have been the 
installation of Grub.

Anyway, to fix this, for starters I'd suggest booting into Mepis and 
then copy and paste the contents of your /etc/fstab into an e-mail and 
send it to the list.  That way we can see if it mounts partitions on 
device id's or UUID numbers?
