Re: [LUG] Devolo

They are nice pieces of kit.

I used the Devolo dLAN Highspeed (85) which are the description implies
works up to 85Mb/s as I've got a rack in the garage of Lab kit and
pc's/phones in my work room.

Two observations I would make.

1. Whilst the boxes imply 85Mb/s the quickest I got was 30 - 40Mb/s (which
is still considerably faster the Wifi). Also this is a shared resource -- so
if you have more than two units the bandwidth is total for the network (or
thereabouts).

2. I managed to run VLAN's over the top of them by back to backing two
switches. Whilst ISL encapsulation (Cisco proprietory) didn't work -- Dot1Q
worked with quite a bit of success. The native VLAN (untagged packets)
worked without a hitch but those with VLAN headers were good whilst the
frames stayed small. My deduction from this is that whilst the units support
the full BCP (which has provision for a VLAN ID). They also have a fixed
length frame size. In my case I am using the VLAN for my ip phones which
will almost always be smaller than the maximum size.

An excellent update to these devices would be having PoE on board. As this
would allow an IP phone to be plugged in and take it's power from the unit.

Best regards

Mick
