Hi Kevin Thanks again for all your help. I tried Knoppix (5.1.1 - I don't have the latest one). The fonts were a little better, in that the line thickness was consistent, but not as good as I used to get in Ubuntu. I also tried an Ubuntu 9.04 live CD I have, and the fonts were fine. I also checked the live CD font configuration, and it appears to be the same as my installed system. I also have other user accounts on my installed system, and their fonts are fine. So I think it is something to do with my specific user configuration. I have tried sudo fc-cache -fv, and sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config, and neither made a difference, (but I think they should only affect the root configuration, not my user specific files, and root GUI applications also show good font resolution anyway.) >>From the look of the fonts I do get, it almost seems as if the fonts are not being found at all, and the system is trying to emulate a font (badly). Any other ideas would be gratefully received.
