It's a port of the acerfand script to kernel land. Apparently there was
a problem with doing it in userland which meant it wasn't reliable.

I too was running the acerfand script for a while. I never had any
issues with it but maybe we've both been lucky.

The AspireOne page on the Ubuntu community wiki says

        The user space script "acerfand" originaly used to fix the noisy
        fan problem can cause race conditions and lockups as it accesses
        registers asynchronous to the kernel.
