I did think about looking into becoming a school governer at my kids school, either that or joining their Friends Of The School group. I was at a assembly for my eldest today and they had a Flash animation running about The Three Little Pigs in French. I couldn't help but notice that they needed to update the Java on the machine, it was running IE7 with a Norton anti-virus toolbar and was a default Acer XP build. I can't help but think that seeing this that the school just doesn't have the resources. If one of my friend's wives is anything to go by (she's a Primary School teacher in Exeter) she has to use her own personal laptop and she's responsible for the security of her laptop (which is a bit worrying considering the recent Conticker worm). Thinking about it, my eldest daughter's teacher lives in Exeter so I may invite her along to the Exwick opening so she can have a look at Ubuntu and some of the stuff on there. >> 3/ The point of my letter was to ensure that the key decision makers >> were aware that opensource is not "mickey mouse / hacker / teenage >> kids" (insert your negative epithet) toy but a real tool >> increasingly used by local governments around the world. I could probably do with some pointers on things like this. After sending out an e-mail to the community centres in Torbay about the Exwick Community Centre and my hopes for doing a similar project in Torbay I got one response. After getting back to them I haven't heard a thing. My next step is to invite them along to Exwick for a demo, hopefully they can speak to Trevor at the centre too.
