To free the ethernet ports from the clutches of the network manager, you can simply edit /etc/network/interfaces Try something like: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp or whatever static configuration you might want. ifup/down should now work. The big improvement with NM is that it now supports mobile broadband.
