But swap will allow the OS to page out unused pages, allowing more memory for disk cache, so there is a marginal performance gain to be had by having a few 100 megabytes as swap. > can swap paritions be shared, between 2 installs Yes, until they change the format in some radical way any Linux instances can share the same swap partition (as long as you aren't running both instances at the same time - i.e. virtualisation). If you hibernate or core dump to swap, expect booting the other distro to either overwrite the data stashed temporarily in the swap space, or get very confused.
