I can't comment on the actual device though - I've never owned one - I
think I'd look for bulb life though and do treat them nice - turn them off
peoperly - which will usually mean leaving them plugged in after you turn
them off to let the fan cool the bulb properly.

Bulb life is huge.  You'll find most will state something like 'average life' but what you want to find out is the waranted minimum life.  We had some Phillips projectors at a school I supported.  The expected bulb life was 1500 hours, but some of them were going after 600 hours.  The minimum warantee life was something below that (I don't remember exactly) , so we were forced to purchase new bulbs only a third of the way in to the bulb life.  These were about £200-250 per bulb.  With the cost of bulbs so high, you can probably justify a new large LCD TV with HD :-)  I was thinking about this the other day in my local pub.  They use a projector for sky sports.
