I think I've cracked it.  It appears that the client is now 
authenticating against the server without using any usernames or 
passwords (probably not ideal but I can always tweak it afterwards).

I'm going to reinstall the server in a VM now  and also re-install the 
client and see if I can re-create the configuration.

Then I've got the task of working out how to cache the credentials for 
laptop users (from what I understand there is a pam module for this).

After that I'll attempt to use an encrypted connection.
