Here's a scenario for you... a nice, shiny new HP G6092EA laptop that comes complete with an nVidia 7000M graphics chip. Not a bad chip - not the greatest laptop nVidia chip around, but certainly not sluggish. It also comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32 (what a mouthful!). Take one laptop owner and add in a Doom3-demo download. Double click and wait... until the message box says "this game requires OpenGL. Windows XP and Vista do not come with OpenGL support. Please download the latest drivers from the graphics chip manufacturer to get OpenGL support." However, nVidia won't supply Vista or XP drivers for "mobile platforms" - that's the responsibility of the laptop manufacturer. HP will (and do) supply nVidia drivers, but remove the OpenGL parts. All in all, OpenGL games seem to be a no-no unless I want to spend *ing ages messing about. Add a sprinkle of Linux and download the Linux nVidia drivers from nVidia's website, install and enjoy full OpenGLness in all its glory.
