What model number is the motherboard?

Just a thought, some of the Tyan server/workstation boards support 
LinuxBIOS (although I would have thought they wouldn't need Grub to boot 
the BIOS).

As Tom suggested, try booting from a rescue disc, or a live CD (Knoppix, 
Ubuntu etc).
