Of course being part of the lug and mailing lists allows you to network 
with great effect, people get to know you, know what you are doing etc,
by being part of OSS projects can sometimes be worth a lot to employers 
looking for real world experience, and work skills such as teamwork, 
time management, etc,  as well as IT skills.
