I think the routine stuff allows anything in.

Certainly my dad has VNC on his box (hmm was installing it a good idea I
wonder - actually he is really good and doesn't fiddle too much in
between trips to Norwich) and the firewalling is done by the PC not by
the modem.

A quick port scan should answer the question anyway - nmap is your friend.

I have the advantage I run my dads email server - so when I need to know
the last IP address he had I just check the mail server logs. Kind of
like DYNDNS but without the sophistication ;)
