If you can get them to forward ports on their router to XP, get them to 
install something like tightvnc and then you should be able to connect 
into their IP address (there's a possibility you might need to get them 
to either disable the XP firewall or allow TightVNC Server).

Works fine for me.  That's how I offer remote support to some of my 
friends on their Windows machines.
