I'm not convinced by either of these arguments.

I think this is Adam Smith's laptop, with its sale price chasing the
marginal cost of production to the bottom.

At the same time the minimum effectiveness of the device rises due to
technical advances, but mainly to amortization of production equipment
for big enough memory chips, fast enough processors, cases as good as
anyone needs or will design, screens that are as bright and sharp as we
think we need yet and so on.

And connectivity.

The distinguishing feature which will remain, I think, will be size of
screen since this defines at present the size of the device.

Everything else will converge.

And the operating system and software runs alongside the hardware to the
bottom, with the market price of a commercial closed source operating
system and office package not held off the US$3 prodcution and
distribution cost of a DVD by anything that I can see short of the
counter-revolution and fascism installed by the subterfuge of a war on
terror.

Which have not yet wholly succeeded.
