If it's from 2001, then it'll be gtk+ version 1. There was a major api break in 2002 (I think it was 2002, might have been 2003) when they moved to GTK+-2.0.

So you'll get more than a few warnings. There were a lot of porting guides written at the time if I recall, so it shouldn't be too difficult to port the GTK+ code to GTK+-2, but I'd say it's worth paying a few extra quid for a book that was written after the break. Every release of GTK+-2 since the break is guaranteed to be binary and source compatible, so any book written after 2003 should be fine.
