Welcome to the new millennium. I console myself with the thought that
as they're utterly unwilling to do anything sensible about climate
change, the Somerset Levels will flood in the not-too-distant future
and we can declare independence. They'll be too busy busting a gut to
stop a few square miles of slums at the end of the Thames from
flooding to worry about anything else.
People's Republic of Wessex, anyone[1]?

[1] Actually, perhaps we should have a monarch, elected bi-annually
and for that time allowed to act like their gene pool wouldn't get
your ankles wet if you went paddling in it. A Monarch of Misrule :)
