For completeness I searched for an awk based solution, as in awk it is
something like;

/re/ { print $1 }

And awk can do use RS to deal with record separators somehow... but I
use awk like twice a decade, so never remember the exact syntax for the
damn thing.

This is just the kind of thing awk was invented for, and Perl is
probably better for just because people use it more often.
