I guess due to the way they're funded they can afford to put development into things like this which I guess in turn can be used elsewhere in the industry. I like the comment about Audacity being used too. When people I work with ask for copies of Adobe Audition for personal use (audio editing package @ £300 a pop) I always suggest Audacity as an alternative.
