See http://www.identity-theft.org.uk/

Various steps

1/ Make sure your passwords are upto scratch (no names of children etc)

2/ Check bank statements regularly (also check that post deliveries are being
delivered to you and are not being taken)

3/ Annually check your statutory credit score. This costs £2 per agency and there
are three agencies in the UK: Experian, Equifax and Callcredit

(Please note that all the agencies will sell you reports costing much more, all the
key data is on the statutory report)

If you see odd items on the report, ask for explanations.

For what its worth, my mother moved house and within 2 days of her moving out she
had been shown as having taken a loan from Littlewoods. After two months I had a
letter back saying the loan had been removed from her record.
