If you're using it for one language in particular, it might be worth
adding a second keyboard lay-out and be able to switch between them
using, for example, left-shift and left-alt. I've done that a few
times with Greek (which uses a different alphabet altogether) and
though you'll have to know (or be willing to learn) which keys
correspond to which characters, after a while it'll prove to be the
fastest option.

It's been a while and I forgot how it's done, but it wasn't too hard.
And I bet in the recent distributions, there's a configuration option
somewhere.

(This reminds me of an, apparently, girl who went to the local library
to check her email but couldn't get into her webmail as she used a Ł
in her password...)
