Hmm, have you tried going to a console screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1), logging in 
and then running:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

When you go through the configuration you should be able to choose 
resolutions, on there it should have 1440x900.

Must admit, I had some issues getting 1440x900 @ 60Hz working properly 
with an NVidia card (running NVidia proprietary drivers) on a mate's PC 
running Gutsy, got there in the end after doing the dpkg-reconfigure 
command.
