We have a HP laptop (basically the same, but a badge engineering job) from a
similar time running Kubuntu. We installed more ram - it has 768mb now and
works fine.
I would suggest it is a ram issue. Most laptops (especially the lower-mid end
ones) of that time came with 128 or 256mb ram, which isn't enough really.
Fiesty is quite heavy on ram I find - I prefer Dapper on my laptops.
As Neil says, it may be failing when attempting to detect something - e.g
networking. The alternate cd allows you to install on lower spec machines
but, if the ram is low, you may find you have better results with Xubuntu or,
better still, DSL or Puppy. The only disadvantage with those is that they are
less "easy" to use compared to Gnome or KDE based systems for many people.
Best bet - assuming the specs of the laptop are otherwise OK would be to
install another 256 or 512mb ram in my view, or,as I mentioned, have a look
at DSL etc.
