I'd really like to see cornwall county council (lib dems again) look into how much they could save money and/or improve services by moving to open source software, particularly if the Big Merger happens. To be honest, the lib dems have the policies and the MPs but are really let down by some very mediocre MEP's, Councillors and Working Groups. Only Simon Hughes could be bothered to answer my email about intellectual property policies - neither Ming nor the other one could be bothered to even acknowledge it. There is a Lib Dem internet group - they do things related to the party website but don't have any impact on policy as far as I can see, there isn't a Information & Communication Technology working group in the new policy committee thing happening and the old specialists in engineering and science has been gathering dust for about a decade by the looks of it. I think there is the possibility to get involved locally but it mostly looks like dinner parties where councillors talk with old biddies about new flower beds in small villages, or raising funds for yet more over-zealous campaigning to get more councillors and MPs into power which I find rather distasteful. I'm more interested in deciding decent policies on areas I know about, informing the public so they can see when they are being lied to or ripped off by government on a range of issues from the ID Cards white elephant to BECTA and the other dodgy PPP quangos.
