to get a non-kdm/gdm session, do this

reboot
at grub prompt type e at menu, then edit the kernel line and add 3 at
end of line, this should get you into runlevel 3, where you can edit
to your hearts content.

BTW, what happens if you press Ctrl-alt-f1, with luck you should get a
text console.
