Right after 16 Hours + of rebuilding the kernel from scratch again its
all ok now. It appears that i must of picked some duff kernel option
combinations that resulted in an incomplete module build (but no error
telling me this) and mkinitrd had a fit and could not cope and just
dumped all modules it could find into the image.

I really should get my desktop and laptop in sync so i can build
kernel .deb packages on my desktop for the laptop!
