1. Don't bother with aptitude, use apt-get update and apt-get upgrade
(or apt-get distupgrade which is probably better.) The subject of the
thread is downgrading with apt - don't confuse things by then using
aptitude.

Apt-get and aptitude are both frontends for APT, as the various websites I have been perusing state perpetually, and aptitude is apparently the preferred one.

2. What about the comment on that page about /etc/apt/apt.conf - have
you checked that?

I shall check it now.
