It's difficult to help, Ben, when you don't detail which bits of the
process you completed and which commands you used. If you added a
source to /etc/apt/sources.list to get the original update, have you
removed that? Have you re-instated the original sources for the
distribution that you want? More info necessary.

Yes, the sources are now as they were pre-screwup.
I created a preferences file which contained three pins for edgy (all >1000) and a fourth for feisty (10). Aptitude continues to report 0 necessary upgrades, following the version number scheme.
