Just in case you don't read the rest of this waffle try kaffeine as I
think it'll do a channel scan without you having to have a list of
channels/frequencies etc.

DVB-S is no problem. Round our way no terrestial TV analog or
digital. You need to buy a satellite card, the skystar2 is cheapest
around £60, but not the fullest featured as it don't support cards for
subscription channels (but probably the only encrypted stuff you want is
from sky and a sky digibox is the only way of doing that).

Most distros, ubuntu, mandriva, suse, mepis, noppix for sure, recognise
the card and will install the needed modules. Though I think you'd need
to do a fresh install to pick the card up. Though there is some software
from linuxtv that builds the module, but it looks complex to me.

Run some coaxe from the dish to the socket on the card sticking out the
back of the pc and if the dish is pointed at something you're away,
(gizmos that detect sta signals can be bought for around £20. sky is
28.2 east).

You can watch using xine, klear and mplayer (all need channels.conf
lists and mplayer needs to be built from source with the right
switches). Mythtv should do it though I've not tried as it's just to
huge a thing. Kaffeine is easiest as it does a channel scan and doesn't
need a channel list (I think it may do this for DVB-T also, you should try).

With sky you get all the main channels, BBC1 - 4, ITV1 - 4,film 4, but
not channel 4 and 5 as Mr Murdock encrypts these and though you can
watch on a sky digibox you need a sky card, even an expired one. Also
about 300 shopping, quizing and evangilising channels, plus good radio
station coverage.
