Funny - I was just trying to sort this same problem for my dad.
Tried setting up filters in Thunderbird but got stuck when I couldn't figure 
out how to put in an OR clause.  Thought I could filter on the To address and 
if it didn't include any of the ones he uses then it could be deleted 
straight from the POP server.
Let me know if you mange to fix this.
