Hi All,

Many thanks for the advice and suggestions :)

Robin, thanks for the timely reminder to check the obvious, but no it
wasn't caps lock (for once :))

In a nutshell it was diskspace. /dev/hda8 (mounted as /) was at 100%
which looked ever so slightly unhealthy.

Partly (probably all :)) my fault. When I download source packages I
mv the package to /usr/src and unpack and and install them from
there. However I was not removing the original *.deb or *.gz etc.
They built up over time, not massively but enough that deleting them
got me 9% space back. Still not great and I need to figure out ways
to cut back the size of the current installation. I tried 'apt-get
clean' as Simon suggested, but that didn't seem to free any space - no
doubt because I don't use a single partition - I mount / and /home
separately - and I know Simon you said it worked on single partition
systems

Anyway, thank you all, now back up and running.

On a final note, Windows always sends up a warning popup when
diskspace is getting low. Is there any application to do that within
Linux?

Kind regards,

Julian
