Almost every Unix/Linux graphical desktop login barfs on finding they can't write to disk. It ought to be in the use case, it ought to say why it failed, most don't, although quite a lot log the reason they fail to disk (oh the irony*). I find "apt-get clean" is often a handy first thing to try on Debian derived distros when out of disk space on the root partition (if there is only one partition). Simon * Part of being a proper multi-user system is of course to continue administrative and security functions when the users are stuffed due to lack of resources, although this might not always be the "obvious thing" on a desktop. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/linux_adm/list-faq.html
