I can get gemu to function with gcc 4.x but the kqemu module does not
function correctly, it cause the guest OS to panic. Without the kqemu
module emulation is ok (but you loose that speed benefit) .

What i have done is rebuilt qemu with gcc 3.3 and the kqemu module with
gcc 4 (as that is my kernel build version so no choice).

You don't need to roll back, i have gcc-3.3 and gcc-4.0 installed at the
same time. Debian symlinks gcc to gcc-4.0 for me so apps compile with
the latest version but if i want to override i just set CC=gcc-3.3 on
the ./configure command line or via the env var and it build with that
version.
