Just did a quick google search for Canon A610 and found this page:
http://www.teaser.fr/~hfiguiere/linux/digicam.html

Not sure how old the page is, but it suggests using gPhoto. There is
also this page:
http://www.hermann-uwe.de/blog/my-new-toy-the-canon-powershot-a610-and-how-to-use-it-with-linux

Called "My new toy: the Canon PowerShot A610, and how to use it with
Linux". Again that page suggests using gPhoto 2. Hope this helps.

I did find a link a link to an RPM for Mandrake here:
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandriva/2006.0/i586/media/delta_main/gphoto2-2.1.6-3mdk.i586.html

It appears that your camera is supported in the latest CVS version of
gPhoto2.
