I think the problem is XP - I think M$ go out of their way to make it difficult to dual boot with Linux - cant see any other OS changes!

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and try it. The suggestion from David (and the Xandros forum) to try fdisk /mbr didn't work unfortunately.

Kind regards,

Just a thought... if you haven't got much data on the laptop, could you not just reinstall XP and then install Xandros?

Which way round did you do it before, did you install Xandros then XP, or XP then Xandros. I must admit, usually I've found most distros to be inteligent enough to find Windows and add it to Lilo or Grub.

How have you got your partitions laid out?

IIRC, when I last dual booted my PC, Windows was on hda1, the Linux root was on hda2 and the Linux swap partition was on hda3. All were primary partitions.

If you can boot a live Linux CD you should be able (as root) to run fdisk -l /dev/hda (or fdisk -l /dev/sda if it's sata or scsi) to list what partitions are on your drive. (Thats a small letter L by the way, not a number 1)
