Sounds like a plan to me.

I see you did a review in August for the members review section.

If it is still based on Redhat 7.3, and 2.4, is it in danger of falling
behind maintenance wise?

I've not had much chance to check their website lately. As far as I know, SME Server 6.0 (which is branded Mitel) and SME Server 6.0.1 (which is branded Contribs.org) are based on RedHat 7.3 with a 2.4 Kernel.

They are in the process of getting ready a new release, version 7.0 which I believe is based on CentOS 4.0. I've tried the Beta version on VMWare and it appears to look and work the same as the previous versions.

At the moment I mainly use it as a mail server. It was running on a P2-266 with 384MB Ram until I installed a 'Contrib' to allow secure IMAP connections. I think the encryption, along with running everything else slowed the poor thing down. It's now running in an Athlon 700 with 128MB Ram and it seems happy.

It can be used as a Windows domain server, which I used to use it for. It would provide domain logons to Windows machines and roaming profiles so which ever PC I logged in to I could get my own settings.

It's certainly a good option for small businesses. It's a good alternative to MS Small Business Server. I originally tried Small Business Server 2003 when I was looking for a server package, although I was put off with the £600 cost + licence fees for client access.
