Basically, the "p1" partition should never be seen under these circumstances, and in my case it indicated that there was a physical problem with the device. I contacted Kingston and (after much deliberation... they weren't too hot on Linux) it turned out that the USB2 controller on the pendrive was knackered. (I don't know if you know... USB-2 devices should all have their own controllers built-in which is why USB-2 devices can communicate with eachother without the need for a PC).
