If you go to the trouble of running an email server, most of the benefit is down to getting email done right in my opinion, where as this way you pick up everyone elses failings. Why bother with an email server, you can simply code up all these accounts in the email client. > - Send mail to my ISP (blueyonder) using standard SMTP, > - Allow users on the network to login to the server ideally using IMAP4 > with Thunderbird or *cough* Outlook *cough*. > - Allow access to the mail using webmail (something along the lines of > Horde webmail). I've used Iloha and Squirrelmail, Squirrelmail is a lot better, Iloha a lot simpler and more hackable, but Squirrelmail is easier to get working well I think. > - Virus/spam checking mail (used ClamAV on the SME server box for virus > checking before) Just reject Windows executable formats (and maybe .zip) at SMTP time, Postfix does it with two regular expressions, for the rest (shouldn't be much) deal with it in the client. > I'm assuming as a minimum I will need a basic install of Debian 3.1 > along with the webserver components and maybe SQL server?
