You're right, renice is for this purpose. However, that presupposes that I know what process is causing problems. You see, the actual processor usage reported by "top" is really low, and the kswapd process that I referred to was using something like 0.3% of the processor time. Now, I haven't looked into the "nice" thing that much, but as I understand it, even with the highest possible priority, if a process isn't using the CPU time other applications will still be able to run; so lowing the priority of a thread that's using such low CPU times won't have much effect. Or am I reading this wrong? The disk was seeing far too much activity, though.
