Re: [LUG] Which ADSL modem?

Hope you're not really banking on being able to do that!!

In my experience when i tried it the year before last whether your
wireless will extend that far is immiterial. You'll never be able to see
anything unless your laptop's screen is 100% in the shade - which largely
defeats the object :)

From what I've read, both here on the list and in Linux Format magazine,
don't get an ADSL modem. Most modems (I believe) have little or no
compatibility with Linux.

Instead, get an ADSL router. This is a small box which plugs into the
phone socket, and into a power socket. You plug your PC into this via a
network cable, and broadband works pretty much immediately.

If you want to be really clever, get a wireless ADSL router, then you can
sit on the beach with a laptop, as I plan to do once broadband arrives
here at the end of the month..
