I think Dave M here is something of an expert on ntp so there are worse places to ask, but I wouldn't disuade you from reading the manual.
Although I seem to remember the first few times I read the NTP documentation coming away more confused than I started. There is a huge gap between the theory (Einstein had all that sorted, nice and simple), and syncing time securely and robustly over a network.
Debian does a simple and easy to install "ntp-simple" package but it does need some extra time sources stuck in if you really care about it being accurate rather than just hoping to get a reasonable time source from the pool.
