I don't know about upgrading an existing disk but I added a second hard drive to one of my computers and partitioned it partly for M$ Win 98 and partly for SuSE Linux. Using LVM enable me to slice up the Linux partition (formatted reiserfs) into parts that I've been able to add at different mount points as needed. I use the second drive for data and temp cd images so that if, by accident, I trash my root partition I've still got all the home directories etc.

I'm not sure what LVM offers you *in this situation* that good old partitioning doesn't, except from adding another layer of complication?

I guess it's the ability to alter things on the fly and even leave parts of the partition unallocated for the future (waste of disk space I hear you say).

Works for me, though.
