This is no doubt why all the decent email clients have a "detect what server supports" for POP3 authentication these days.
There is a school of though that says keeping computer data in easily human readable forms is generally a good thing, precisely because it makes it easier for humans to troubleshoot problems, and the benefits of binary representation for the machine is minimal. Some of this school are no doubt found amongst those responsible for XML.
