Hi all,

I have spent some time hanging around the ralink forum over the last few

Well done Robin. The more hardware thats supported through GPL the
better ! Keep up the good work.

I chickened out of having a wireless cards in my home network and used
the US robotics "black box" (yes it is black) network -> wireless with a
built in web engine / dhcp for configuration purposes. They work ok'ish
but 802.11b performance tails off rapidly after the first few meters
after that (luckily) it settles down for a usable distance but still
slow :-(.

I have however great hopes for the future of wireless networking esp. in
3rd world countries where infrastructure is difficult to obtain /
maintain. For example in the Philippines it takes months to get a land
line but you can go into a shop and buy a mobile over the counter and be
up and running, better still Im told you can buy a sim chip and put it
in (certain models) you existing phone.

There are still some "political" / "bureaucratic" problems to be solved
before "freedom" can be obtained in some of these countries "wireless
networking" requires permits permits = $. Also wireless may end up like
the early internet (no official regulation of addresses / frequencies
etc.).

Mesh networks seem to be the in thing at the moment ( apparently there's
a big one in south hams area where cable refuses to go !).
